I shall not lose!

It's been a busy weekend for all of us. Last Friday a group of our players had a 3-day trip to Baguio! They compete with some of the teams there (dota), as well as to have their sembreak vacation. Unfortunately, I did not come with them so I have no idea what happened. But I confirmed that they won! Good job guys! (balato naman kame hehe)

Another group went to Mall of Asia last Sunday to compete in the Soul Calibur IV tournament! Our team includes, Harold "ruin" Mallari, Ralf "surebox" Santos, Leo "pheee" Abon and yours truly with special participation of Sir Khenny. A total of 40 players joined the tournament.

1st Match - Leo using Seoung-Mina VS. Taki

We have no access to Xbox360 so what we did is we practiced Soul Calibur 3 in our PS2. Unfortunately, Seoung-Mina plays differently in SC4 but still Leo managed to win 1 round against a very agile Taki. Taki wins.

2nd Match - Ray using Sophitia VS. Sophitia

Sophie's moveset is almost the same in SC4. But I got distracted in Sophitia's costume, wearing her silhoutte undies right in front of my face haha Actually I did not practice with them. I got pissed off the last round because I got ringed out eventhough I positioned myself far away from the edge..

3rd Match - Ralf using Mitsurugi VS. Sophitia

Mr. Surebox had a surewin because he got pinned up with a very beautiful lady haha. He did not even gave her a mercy round! where's the love bro. Hope we can see her again in the next tournament, without her boyfriend haha.

4th Match - Ruin using Kilik VS. Nightmare

Ruin is the most experienced SC player in the team. Too bad he sold his SC4 months ago (nagsawa na daw kasi). I find Nightmare imbalanced, he has this ring out move that seems unstoppable. But Ruin never gave his opponent a chance, Kilik is just too fast for this scary character. Kilik wins.

5th Match - Ralf using Mitsurugi VS. Maxi

Now this is one exciting match. First 2 rounds were won by Maxi the spammer. Ralf managed to win the 3rd round with just a single hit left in his life bar! It was breathtaking...and the spamming continues. Maxi wins.

6th Match - Ruin using Kilik VS. Voldo

I'd heard that the guy using Voldo was the runner-up in the previous SC4 tourny last August. After winning his match, ruin and ralf left the area to buy some drinks, he was unaware that this Voldo was his next opponent and failed to scout on some moves. The result is inevitable, Voldo used his secret snake move and Kilik was caught offguard. Khenny and I failed to inform Ruin about his fighting style. Voldo wins.

And our quest to be Soul Calibur champions is over. Given more time to practice, I think we can really put up a good fight. I find the XBox controller too foreign maybe because we are too comfortable with a PS2 controller. Im not a fan of SC but I highly recommend this game. It's much better than Tekken 6 in some aspects. Plus this game may substitute Virtual Fighter in WCG 2009 since it is more accepted by a lot of gamers, sorry still no Tekken 6 for next year.

Paradigm Tournament Report Oct 5 2008

Last week the most anticipated tournament of the year was held at Paradigm Computer Shop. It was Sir JB's 23rd tournament!! Too bad it has no title this time around, but nevertheless it was the most attended tournament of the year considering that the first prize is not that enticing. It attracted a lot of players because of the competition that has been the trademark of Sir Jb's tourny. It's been a while since we had a full grid of 32 teams. And as promised, Team Pacific participated in full force with a record high of 4 teams.

All 3 teams lost in the 1st round aside from Dyna who made it up to the 2nd round. It only shows that we need more practice and there's a lot more room for improvement since we have more teams now. If there's one man who deserves a recognition that day then that is no other than Sir Khenny. Unleashing his Skeleton King and stepping up in the right moment, it only shows that what a true gamer needs is not an uncanny skill... but a fighting heart. All hail Sir Khenny!

Tito Manny's Iron Fist Tournament

If there's one game that can bind us together here in Pacific, then that would be TEKKEN! Everybody loves Tekken, you can see everyone bringing their PSP's and bully each other out. It's only a matter of time before we organize an official Tekken Tournament. So last Saturday (Oct 5) we decided to have an "unofficial Tekken tournament" at Tito Manny's Place! The format is Round Robin composed of 7 players. Best of 3 wins, 1 win is raise to 3 rounds. No mercy rule. Players can change characters in between rounds. And the players are:

After 1 and a half hour of pure awesomeness, a champion has been crowned. Vini won the final match with Sir Kenny (Asuka vs. Paul). He also won the pot money worth P7o pesos! But to be named as the first Tito Manny's Iron Fist Tournament champion....priceless! (lols)

Metagame

Have you ever heard the word "metagame"? It is one of those complex words pro-gamers use, so let's define it first:

METAGAME - is a broad term usually used to define any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game. In other words, sometimes using out-of-game information, or resources, to affect one's in-game decisions.

Every game has its own metagame. (even sports alike). For me metagame is simply the "best strategy available that can help you achieve victory". In our own common terms - "diskarteng malupit". Back when the Chicago bulls used the "triangle offense" it was one of its kind, and it was the metagame of that time. But when Shaquille O'neal entered the NBA, suddenly teams are finding ways to stop him, because he became the metagame itself. Metagame changes through time. When I was playing Warcaft 3 a year ago, everybody is using Night Elf with Beastmaster as their first hero, because it was the ultimate combination and nobody wants to waste time figuring out a way to defeat it (because there's no way..). So if you can't beat them, then join them. And for the next few months every tournament finals is a NE mirror match. Until Blizzard decided to "nerf" the race and thats where the metagame drastically change. There can be multiple metagame in any environment. In the world of Magic: The Gathering, predicting the metagame is one of the most important preparations you must undertake (next to playtesting). If you can predict it (and yes you can!) then you can design your deck to be resilient or at least play around the metagame. The beauty in Magic is that it has more than one metagame in any given format. For example there are 3 metagame decks players can use right now (they can only choose one), these 3 deck are equally powerful and they cancels each other like a "rock, paper, scissors" analogy. This is what we call a "healthy metagame" because players have more options, unlike my warcraft example above where in players have no choice but to play the same race. Metagame is not a complex term afterall. Just remember that its form varies on what game you are playing.

In light of the upcoming Paradigm tournament I would like to share some facts from the ongoing Asian Dota Championship '08. Unlike any other game, the metagame in Dota is so vast, but still you can extract relevant data that can help you build your most formidable line-ups.

WGT Report 2008

The WGT preliminaries is over, unfortunately our team fell short again. (sounds familiar haha). But just like the famous saying says, we came there not to "start the race"... but rather to "finish the race!".

Halos alas-sais na rin ng umaga kami natapos nung araw ng sabado (tourny day). Nakipaglaro pa kasi kami sa Team EZ, wala kasing praktis ang Team Pacific na binubuo nina James, Iddo, AC, Nice, and Yukz. As usual puyat na naman kami haha! nagpalipas na lang kami ng oras sa apartment nina Ge kasama sina Proi and Popoy. 10:30 am kasi kailangan nasa Megamall na kami or else baka maunahan kami sa 16 teams slot ng WGT tournament. Almost 9:45 am na din kami nakaalis sa apartment, ang tagal kasi maligo ni James! Nauna na kami nina Iddo and James sa Megamall. Awa ng diyos eh umabot kami sa registration, ang dami na kasing teams nung dumating kami. Akala ko iiral na naman ang pagka Filipino time nating mga pinoy haha, pero since meron naman kami deposit slip eh 99.9% kami na ipa-prioritize :) After a while eh dumating na din sina Ge, Popoy, Nice and Yukz at mukhang reding ready na sila maglaro, kahat bakas sa mga mata nila ang pagkapuyat. Nakakatuwa kasi may libreng T-shirt, Cap and Lace ang mga organizers, patunay lang ni hindi scam ang WGT gaya ng mga nakalagay sa forums. At sobrang natuwa ako kasi nakita ko ang mga pundasyon ng Dota community dito sa Pinas like sina Sir JB (na gumawa ng bagong team), Rhorho (nagpakalbo), Team Mineski (some old school players), Dissidia, DAF, EZ, at marami pang iba. Too bad wala nang team si Arby, hindi kasi kumpleto pag wala ang FLOW captain. But anyway its time to pass the torch ika nga nila. We used to play in this kind of tournaments, kaya naman nakakamiss din maglaro. It's amazing to see na madami nang teams dito sa Pinas at unti unti nang nawawala ang "new blood" mentality.

And then something unexpected happened, tinawag ng organizers ang Team PPC! Na shock ako kasi hindi naman ako nag deposit for Team B kasi madami hindi pwede, may mga klase kasi. But since andun naman si Popoy and Ge, nag decide kami na laruin na lang kasi sayang naman ang mga freebies na shirts and caps. Buti na lang at sa likod lang ng megamall nag aaral si Dabe at isang mrt ride lang si Shobe galing Makati. So tinawagan na din namin si Proi and suddenly nabuo uli ang Pacific Poker Club! composed of Proi, Dabe, Shobe, Popoy, and Rayray :) Nanalo ang Team Pacific nung Round 1, gamit ang Medusa (yukz), Qop (nice), Lion (iddo), Warlock (AC), Spectre (jms). Nag revolve ang line-up ng kalaban kay Meepo (Team LS). Ang PPC naman unfortunately eh natalo agad sa Round 1 laban sa Team Arena (taft). Pinabayaan kasi namin mag farm yung Treant at napaaga ang kanyang Refresher and Radiance haha It's been a while since nakapasok uli kami sa isang gaming arena, sayang lang walang kumuha samin ng pictures! nagsikainan kasi ang mga ulaga. Bad news is natalo ang Team Pacific sa Round 2 against the former players of Team GL. I really dont know what happened in that game pero nakasimangot na lahat nung natapos. Well natural lang naman yun kasi sanay naman kami ng natatalo sa mga ganitong events haha. Siguro a little mistake lang sa picks, laning, timing and sobrang antok na sila lahat. Almost 4 hours kasi kami naghintay for Round 2! and considering na 2 hours lang ang tulog nila...gg talaga. By 5 pm eh ramdam ko na din ang sobrang antok, hindi naman tayo nag rarason, its just that we never really learn do we! Ilang tournaments na din kami sumali nang puyat at syempre nauuwi lang sa masamang pagkatalo (na o-owned lang kami ng sobra haha). But anyway we're just happy na naging part tayo ng WGT. I can say that it's been a successful event for us, not just for Dota but for Counterstrike and Need for Speed too! Hopefully eh maging yearly event na ito :)

G.G. = universal ang ibig sabihin nito. Pag nanalo gg, pag natalo gg, pag nakapatay gg, pag wala lang gg pa rin. Nag originate ito sa starcraft gg means good game. Pero minsan ang ibig sabihin nito ay gago. lol
Noob = isa lang ang ibig sabihin nito, mas tanga ka pa sa isang tanga.
Farm = ibig sabihin ay pumera ka ng creeps.
Leaver = mga taong walang magawa kundi mangulo. Sasali sa isang game tapos sabay mag quit. Iwasan ang mga ganitong tao, mga salot.
B = back ang ibig sabihin nito, umatras ka at huwag lumaban.
Push = lumusob ng sabay sabay, huwag maging pasaway.

Wakekek = ibang tawag sa "shadow strike" skill. Wakekek!
Gay = mga "kabaklahang" strategy na ginagawa ng ilang player na desperado na manalo. IMO wala namang masama sa pagiging Gay dahil ito ay isang malupet na strategy. I do gay strategies myself. Being Gay is cool.
Imba = short for imbalanced. karaniwang naririnig mula sa mga sore losers. Pag narinig mo ang salitang ito mula sa isang player matapos mo syang talunin, just say "kekek", ito ay para makaiwas sa gulo.
Owned= ito ang isa sa mga pinakamasakit na pwedeng mangyari sa yo sa isang DotA game. Iba-iba ang pwedeng kahulugan nitong word na ito. Ultimately, it means PANIS ka.
dagdag sa Noob = kung ang Gosu ay ginagamit as slang for magaganda, ang Noob din- you guessed it right- para sa mga pinagkaitan ng kagandahan.
Etheria = sinasabing pag nakapatay ka ng kalaban eh mapupunta sya sa etheria.

Cha-cha = isang strategy sa dota kung saan lilituhin nyo yung kalaban, usually sabay nyo ipu push ang top and bottom lane.
Taktak = masasabing tumataktak ang isang hero kapag hindi ito humahampas sa kalaban, si ruin ang nagpauso nito dahil isa siyang dakilang taktakero haha
Pang youtube! = ito ang masasabi mo pag pang highlight material ang isang move or clash! kulang na lang kasi i-upload na sa youtube!
Fake push! = isang strategy sa dota kung saan kunwari kayong magpupush ng isang side then pag nagtp na yung kalaban eh sabay sabay kayong magbaback!
